How to Prepare for Your Trip to Europe

Traveling to Europe can be an exciting and exhilarating experience. The sheer age of the European cultures is often amazing in and of itself to Americans, who are really just newbies when it comes to the age of their civilization. Add to that the amazingly breathtaking and beautiful sights, and you can see why everyone should take at least one trip to Europe in their lifetime.

Getting ready to travel to Europe can make you want to claw your eyes out. There are so many details to deal with, from flights to travel insurance, that you can just about go crazy. Here are some basic things you can do ahead of time to help things go more smoothly:

Get a good guidebook. Yes, you have the Internet. No, buying a guidebook isn’t strictly necessary. However, you may find that you don’t want to have to try to log on to the Internet every time you want to get some information. Buy a guidebook for each of your destinations in Europe, and then make sure you pack them.Choose your destinations wisely. Europe is a big place. You need to be selective about what you’re going to see. Understand that you won’t be able to take it all in over a couple of weeks. Make a priority list of destinations, and then look at the travel distances and times between them. Plan your itinerary based on both importance and travel practicality.Make reservations ahead. Backpacking across Europe and staying in the closest Hostel may work for single 22 year-old dudes, but it’s not nearly as appropriate for families. Make sure you reserve everything from hotel rooms to train tickets to passes for various attractions ahead of time.Get help if you need it. Travel agents can really help lay things out for your European trip. Choose an agent that’s actually been to Europe, if at all possible. Realize that using a travel agent may actually wind up being less expensive than trying to plan the trip all on your own, as well.
