When we toured Europe, we did it by train on a Eurail pass – and my husband was tiresome to tour with! Don’t get me wrong, he loves a holiday, but he hates the practicalities of travelling. He’s very particular about packing his clothes , so he gets stressed having to pack and repack everything every day when touring. But more important, he loathes sleeping in a strange bed: he wonders about hygiene and dislikes unfamiliar places.
To my surprise, I’ve discovered there are many other people exactly like my hubby, reluctant to go on holiday because they hate the upheaval or have trouble sleeping in strange places.

Campervans have improved in the last few years. The interior is luxurious, with all kinds of ingenious ideas to maximise comfort and storage space. If you want luxury, you can have a huge Winnebago – but if you’re anxious about being at the wheel of a monster, there are plenty of small models which might not suit a family, but are perfect for a couple.
If you’re thinking of a European holiday, there are several companies which will hire you a van, completely fitted out, on arrival – or they can even sell you a van, which they buy back at a guaranteed rate when your vacation is over. That option can work out far more economical if you’re planning a long trip.
There’s no need to be nervous about driving on the wrong side of the road. With the steering wheel on the other side of the vehicle, too, it doesn’t feel as strange as you might expect, and you’ll soon get used to it.
As for where you can stop –Europe has a huge number of campsites and many of them are amazing – more like staying at a resort than a camp site!
The best thing is that for your entire holiday, you can unpack once and forget it – and sleep in the same bed for the entire vacation. Heaven!
